This Month’s Great Public Myth Finds!

I’m super excited that I discovered Public Myth clothing. I first found out about Public Myth on Model Mayhem completely by accident. One day, I was browsing clothing designers and Public Myth’s profile came up. Since the avatar photo was catchy, I decided to take a look and I must say that I’m very glad I did.

Designer Kerry Pollock is the driving force of the company. After having talked to Kerry a few times, I can definitely see that he has true passion for living a healthy lifestyle and for his business.

Another great thing about Public Myth is that it’s a local Vancouver company. The clothing is made with care in Vancouver using high quality threads and fabrics.

This month’s post features a few great pieces from Public Myth.

In the two photos above, I’m wearing the Cross V Halter Top and Teaser Leggings. The bra fits great and has the right amount of support. The leggings are also a great fit. These leggings can be worn at the gym or they can be used with a “dressy” top to go out.

In the two images above, I’m wearing the Retro Booty Shorts and Teaser Sport Bra.
The sports bra fits very well. In addition to being stylish, it is comfortable and functional. The booty shorts are awesome. In addition to looking pretty cool, they are great for jogging in or going to the gym.

If you are a fitness-minded fashionista, I think that it’s definitely worth for you to take a look at Public Myth and there is a chance that you will find an awesome piece of clothing for yourself. You can also check out Public Myth on Facebook since they have fan promotions and other cool stuff on their page!

Cheers!

1. Tiered Deco Earrings, Turquoise

“This line contains some of the most decadent, spectacular pieces that Charm & Chain carries. Badgley Mischka’s designs have a jewel-centric and often Victorian aesthetic; they tend to meld ornate motifs with an “old money” quality that stops short of being too, too ostentatious. Glass Crystals and Beads 14k Gold Plated Clip-On 2.75 Inches Long”

2.Turquoise Anna Sui Wing Earrings

Designed by Erickson Beamon for the Anna Sui runway, these amazing ornaments will infuse your look with a hint of the exotic. The one adjective that unites Erickson Beamon’s wide array of designs? Dramatic. Whether the duo puts their talents to a waist-long, waterfall necklace, an oversized cuff dripping with jewels, or pastel chandelier earrings, their signature look is over-the-top, head-turning, and worth every last cent. Turquoise, Swarovski Crystal, Vintage Glass Beads Oxidized Sterling Silver Plated 2.25 Inches Long

3. Esmerelda Earrings

“An elegant, evening version of a pair of studs. These drops look straight out of the ’30s. Lots of designers are inspired by antique and vintage finds, but Elizabeth Cole Jewelry takes things a step further. The collection, designed by Stephanie Owen, is full of whimsical, blinged-out pieces that draw on the decorative traditions of the Middle Ages and ancient Greece and Rome: Griffins, eagles, rams’ heads, and Gordian knots all make appearances in her pieces. The bright, earthy yellow color of the gold she uses is incredibly distinct, and the intricately designed costume jewelry can worn alone or layered and looped with fine jewelry. Swarovski Crystals 24k Gold Plated 1 Inch Long “

4.  Gold Lace Dangle Earrings

“If you’re looking for a guaranteed showstopper, these oversized danglies won’t disappoint. Ornate and sophisticated, they’re on our short-list when we’re dressing to impress in a hurry. This line contains some of the most decadent, spectacular pieces that Charm & Chain carries. Badgley Mischka’s designs have a jewel-centric and often Victorian aesthetic; they tend to meld ornate motifs with an “old money” quality that stops short of being too, too ostentatious. Glass Rhinestones Gold Plated Hardware Post Backs 3 Inches Long, 1.5 Inches Wide “

5.Crystal Cluster Chandeliers

“Specially selected for a wedding or a formal event, these earrings will instantly make you feel like the belle of the ball. Markus Klinko on ICONS, the Exhibits, Skinny Models, Model Mayhem and More!

Since my first interview with celebrity photographer Markus Klinko, many exciting events have happened in his and Indrani’s careers. Markus and Indrani have been working together for nearly two decades and have produced an admirable body of work. Their portfolio includes stunning images of the hottest A-list stars  like Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige, Kate Winslet, Katie Holmes, Eva Mendes, Anne Hathaway, Will Smith, Elijah Wood, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Keanu Reeves, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Val Kilmer, Serena Williams, Jay-Z, and Kanye West.

Markus and Indrani have also collaborated extensively with The Honourable Daphne Guinness, also known as the couture queen. The Legend of Lady White Snake: Tribute to Alexander McQueen is a great piece directed by Indrani which sums up their collaborations with Daphne Guinness.

Markus Klinko is an inspiration to many photographers. Not only is he a true artist and a great talent, but he is also a man of integrity. I have talked to very few people who have achieved his level of success and yet remained so grounded.

I am honoured to have had the pleasure of another interview with Markus. It was great to catch up again and find out what two of photography’s biggest talents have been up to in the last couple of years. In this interview, he not only gives praise to modeling sites like Model Mayhem which have provided many models with the opportunity to enter the industry, but also he takes a firm stand against anorexic models. He also told me more about his new book, ICONS, the upcoming Exhibits, and more.

AVIVA: Could you tell everyone a general outline of what has happened in the past year in terms of your show, additional agency representation, and other significant events in your career?
MARKUS KLINKO: We are really in the beginning of a new chapter.  We are breaking away from that time when we initially entered the industry, found some initial success, and then becoming kind of well-known, the TV show Double Exposure. The book is summing it all up. Now, we are moving to Los Angeles from New York. We are also going to be on the West Coast like you. That has several reasons: I think that Los Angeles is becoming more and more of a global fashion city; many big brands have relocated their head offices to Los Angeles; in addition to shooting stills, Indrani and I have also started producing and directing short films, commercials, videos, and we might actually produce and direct a feature film; we are also engaged in creating a fashion line and a lifestyle brand; we have all these new ventures that we are involved in. Of course, the photography that we do will still be at the forefront of our activity but we are branching out into all kinds of new and different things that are related to fashion.

We are open-minded in the style of photography and our style has relaxed itself quite a bit since we started. In terms of production, we are a lot lighter now and we don’t necessarily need those gigantic productions that we used to put up. We can still get great images, in fact even better images. I’m actually really excited.

I mean you’ve seen the shots that we did with Daphne Guinness. She is a spectacular subject. She is a celebrity but is also an artist. Daphne is really a fashion icon and she has a huge following. We’ve done the film and it won a lot of awards, although the film is more of Indrani’s doing and responsibility, I am involved but just not in the center. I love still photography more and I’m not as much involved in video and film stuff as Indrani, that’s really her passion.

Definitely, I would say the book is a very significant milestone in our career, as well as the exhibits that we have coming up.

We really want to produce images that are not just for magazines or commercial purposes, but that are also art which will be used in galleries and books. This is another big development in our career.

AVIVA: Could you tell us more about your book, Icons?
MK:  Indrani and I have been working together now for 18 years. In a way, this book is a celebration of our 18th anniversary. It really looks back on all of our best work, which is very much focused on celebrities, like actresses and musicians, but it also includes a variety of models, like Naomi Campbell, Natalia Vodianova, Laetitia Casta, and Iman. They have transitioned from being models to becoming famous actresses and TV personalities. The book is doing phenomenal right now. I am happy that it has been well-received all over the world. We’ve been working on this book very, very hard and it’s really a labour of love for us. So much work goes into making a book. Even though the images in the book were not specifically shot for it, they were all shot for other opportunities that have come along but to put it together along with the text took a lot of work. The text in the book is about each photoshoot, there were hundreds of hours of interviewing with our writer. We’ve described our entire career when we were writing about these photoshoots, some of which were done 12-13 years ago, although quite a few were done six months ago. It really spans our entire career. This book has been one of our main focuses this year, in addition to growing our activity in the film and commercial.

We’ve got fantastic feedback from all the people who are in the book and their publicists/managers, we are pretty close with some of them. Actually, Iman wrote the foreword for the book and so did Fern Mallis, the founder of New York Fashion week. We have two forewords in the book, one by Iman and one by Fern Mallis. Fern is a very important person in the New York fashion world because she is the initial founder of New York Fashion Week. We really appreciate the fact that they have agreed to write with us.

One of the reasons why we are so excited about ICONS is because it is a wonderfully-printed book and yet it sells for as little as $15.00 on Amazon right now. Some of the other photography books are generally more expensive, some can even be above $100.00. We wanted to bring out a book that was very accessible to young people and to people of all income levels.

AVIVA: How about models?
MK: We typically don’t work too often with models, because celebrities are preferred for some of the top advertising campaigns and cover shoots. However, I feel that models will have a big comeback on the covers as well as spokespeople in big advertising campaigns. I am starting to see models coming back to land covers and I remember a period of about 5-8 years when almost no models were used on covers of big magazines. I feel that we will see a return to models being featured on magazine covers and in advertising campaigns.

AVIVA: Wouldn’t it be cheaper to get a model for the same advertising campaign or a shoot though?
MK: That’s absolutely true, but you have to understand that advertisers and magazines know that there is a worldwide interest in celebrities. I mean even with our book, the title is ICONS, and it might as well be “celebrities” or the “unreachable Gods and Goddesses of our time”, but that’s what the public wants. The public really loves to put people on a pedestal. Therefore, the effect that an advertising campaign or a magazine cover has when it features a very well-known celebrity is a lot stronger than if it’s a model, especially if the model is new. Although the new model might appeal to some insider fashion crowd, but the reaction of the general public is so much stronger if it is a celebrity. When we photograph Beyonce for a L’Oreal campaign, everyone talks about it, but when we photograph models, even if they are great models from Elite, IMG, and other big agencies, the reaction is not the same. If we do a shoot with a celebrity, it’s going to get picked up everywhere, from Perez Hilton, to New York Post, which is not the case if we just shoot a model. I think that’s why the industry shifted that way.

I hope that new supermodels are going to be created soon and that the public is going to accept them. We are certainly ready for it.

AVIVA: Can you tell us about the exhibit at Lincoln Center on Dec. 11, 2012 as well as any other ones?
MK: The Lincoln Center is not only the world’s most fabulous Center for The Performing Arts but it’s also the location where New York Fashion Week takes place. On December 11th, we open Lincoln Center and then we will be in Zurich, Switzerland on January 6th, where we have another ICONS evening, where we are doing Photo 13, it’s the biggest photography festival in Switzerland. Then, we are opening the same exhibit as Lincoln Center in Los Angeles at a famous art gallery on January 12.

The first day at Lincoln Center will be mostly for the Press, VIPs and celebrities, but it will be open to the public from the 12th-16th of December. It’s at Alice Tully Hall, which is the biggest hall at Lincoln Center. We are going to be displaying 8 feet tall prints that are all the highlights of the ICONS book. We are very excited! Then that same exhibit will be in Zurich and Los Angeles.

We are also hoping that it will be in Hong Kong and that it will go around the world.

AVIVA: Since she is on the cover of your book, I’ve got to ask, what was Lady Gaga like to work with?
MK: Gaga is phenomenal. She is definitely, alongside with Daphne Guinness, and probably Britney Spears and Beyonce, Eva Mendes, and Kate Winslet, has been part of a handful of our favourite photoshoots that we have done. Of course, some of them we’ve worked with many times. Beyonce-we worked with her over and over again. Lady Gaga…we only shot her once and that was for Hello Kitty, it was a fantastic experience. She has actually used those photos as part of her album package. Gaga is one of the most interesting stars in the world right now; I was fascinated with her intelligence, the level of artistry and knowledge that she has, not just in her domain as a singer but also photography, fashion and general art. She is very, very educated and really smart.

Lady Gaga is one of those women, who, like Madonna, have these super glamorous careers, but they are very intelligent and very much in charge of their own careers. Lady Gaga more so than any other artist that we have worked with. Despite the fact that she has a large entourage of people that work for her, she is completely in charge and she dictates exactly how she works. It’s extremely clear after we’ve worked with her that nobody tells Gaga what to do, she tells people what to do. She is a great collaborator when we worked with her, we had a wonderful exchange of ideas, but she doesn’t have handlers that tell her what to do. A lot of artists have an entourage of people that handle everything for them, do everything for them, tell them what to do, what to wear, how to look, how to smile, how  to talk, but definitely not Gaga. She is not contrived, everything with Gaga comes naturally-that’s just who she is.She is not fake. She is super cool, fun, and is very, very passionate about what she does. I love her. She’s a great dancer, great entertainer, wonderful fashion leader, she’s a great superstar. The fact that she agreed to be on the cover of our book is a big deal for us. We are very proud to have her.

AVIVA: Have you ever worked with Kate Upton?
MK: No, but I would love to work with her. She is very cute and sexy. She definitely embodies the kind of new model that is exactly what I was talking about earlier. Those kind of girls are going to bring the models back onto the magazine covers and into the advertising campaigns because she is more relate able to women. I like to talk about this actually. Maybe we’ve talked about this before, but specifically about the body shape of a girl like Kate Upton. She is a real woman with curves; she is not a skinny anorexic 90-lb 6ft tall girl. Let me be more clear though. I am not against skinny girls. If a girl is naturally skinny, they can be very sexy and very beautiful but what I don’t like is all these modeling agents and all these designers pushing these poor 14-15 year-old girls, who happen to be very tall and very thin already, to become anorexic and be so unattractively skinny. I just don’t understand why and who wants that. I think that this is why celebrities have taken over the covers of fashion magazines because I think that people aren’t interested in skeletons. People want real women.
I can tell you for sure that women with curves are hotter than women that are sticks. But again, when Kate Moss first started out, she was very skinny and yet attractive. However, when you look at girls who are naturally a little bit curvy and they are forced to become so skinny that they are no longer themselves, then I get very upset.

To all the designers out there: If girls don’t fit the sample size, just make the sample bigger. That’s it. That’s the solution. Why do the samples have to be so small that no normal woman can fit into it? I just don’t get it. Take the biggest stars of today-none of them are super skinny and they look fantastic in designer clothes. Why do we need girls who model them to be insanely unhealthy? This is another reason why we dedicated our book, ICONS, to celebrities and women who are real trendsetters, like Beyonce, Eva Mendes, Lindsay Lohan-those are real women with real bodies.

I wish that the modeling world would be a bit more diverse. I think that it’s good that Model Mayhem exists. I think at least it gives a chance to girls who are not necessarily 5’11” and ultra thin to start modeling and they can do different kind of photos and maybe even get discovered. They may end up on the cover of Sports Illustrated, because clearly they are not looking for skeletons and I think Kate Upton is a very good example. I’m sorry for the long answer, but I’m very passionate about this.

AVIVA: That’s great. I wish that more photographers would be like you when it comes to thinking about this subject.
MK: I think that we need to speak out about this. The editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani, actually started a campaign within Italian Vogue with many of the Vogues following her because she is absolutely against skeletons. She has made very strong statements in press conferences that Italian Vogue will not publish sick-looking skinny girls and that they are showcasing beautiful healthy women. You can’t ask girls that are already skinny to keep losing weight-it’s unattractive, unhealthy, and it traumatizes the rest of the world. Young women all over the world develop this complex that they can’t live up to that standard of having a size zero body when it’s really a non-issue.
Some of the sexiest actresses I’ve shot, that are in the book, are a size 4 or 6-not zero. Why should they be?

AVIVA: I agree. I think that it’s good to have a well-taken care of, healthy, proportionate body and it doesn’t matter if it’s a 2 or a 4 or a 6, and then find clothes that complement the best features.
MK: I fully agree. We are on the same page. I’m not afraid to talk about it.

AVIVA: Do you foresee doing another book, exhibit, or TV show in the next few years?
MK: Yes. Absolutely. We are already talking about another book and we are negotiating a new TV show. This is only the beginning of some of the new activities that we have undertaken over the last two years.

AVIVA:What are some upcoming plans for you and Indrani in the near future that you can talk about?
MK: We have just signed a contract with the Gucci Group, which is a company that owns all of Gucci and other brands. Our partner in the exhibit at Lincoln Center is Girard-Perregaux, which is the watch brand that’s owned by the Gucci Group. They are the most high-end watch brand in the world, they have just recently been purchased by the Gucci Group and before that they were an independent Swiss watch-making brand at the highest level. We are actually going to be shooting all of their campaigns right now and we just started with an initial contract with them. They are going to be announcing it soon and they are actually the official sponsor of the Lincoln Center event. We are very happy and proud as this is a phenomenal partner. It’s phenomenal to be working with the Gucci Group.

We are also getting offers from galleries all around the world to join their roster of artists, so it’s a very exciting development for us.

I would like to once again thank Markus for his time and for the interview. I wish him and Indrani continued success.

Chinos Versus Jeans: The Big Debate

Chinos and jeans are both fashion staples of the male wardrobe. The epitome of casual coolness for decades, these items of clothing are embraced by men across the world and worn in various combinations to achieve a diverse selection of styles.

Given that most men love both their chinos and their jeans in equal measure, deciding which item to grab in the morning can be a tough call.

To help you or the man in your life make such an arduous decision, take a look at our guide to when one fashion staple may be more appropriate than its rival:

Hot Weather: Chinos

Whilst jeans are typically made out of denim, chinos are typically made out of cotton; hence the latter is usually considerably cooler to wear in hot weather than the former. It is advisable therefore to opt for mens chinos in hotter weather, where the cotton material will help keep you considerably cooler than thicker, heavier denim.

Dinner Parties: Chinos

Whilst both chinos and jeans exude a certain degree of casualness, jeans ultimately overrule chinos in the casual stakes. As a result, it’s often a better idea to wear asmart pair of mens chinos when attending a formal occasion, such as a dinner party or a meal with colleagues.

A dark pair of slim fitted men’s chinos in either navy blue or black, looks particularly smart when worn with an elegant pair of shoes and a crisp white shirt.

Football Match: Jeans

Men that wear a pair of chinos to a football match run the risk of looking slightly ‘out of place’. Similar to all items of fashion there is a time and place for men’s chinos and a football match on a Saturday afternoon is certainly not one of them.

Instead, stick to wearing your favourite pair of mens jeans to a football match and you’re likely to look and feel more appropriately dressed for the occasion.

Office Attire: Chino

Although the days of wearing a suit and tie every day to the office may be long gone, jeans still remain that little bit too casual when it comes to dressing for work.

Men’s chinos on the other hand have been considered a stylish, cool, comfortable and appropriate item of office clothing for several decades and they continue to remain so.

Office chinos can either be ‘dressed up’ with a shirt or ‘dressed down’ with a t-shirt, depending on how relaxed your boss is when it comes to the company’s dress code.

In addition to being a successful model herself, she takes great pride in mentoring new models to help them succeed as well. She is a firm believer in the fact that a model does not need agency representation in order to be successful, which is what her new book, The Self-Made Model – Success Without Agencies, is about. From what I have heard, it is a FANTASTIC bookfor aspiring models who would like to learn how to get started as a model, how to pose, how to book jobs, and how to market themselves.

I am honoured to have been able to interview Christie for this feature, and I hope that you too will enjoy it.

AVIVA: Have you always wanted to be a model, or did you have other career aspirations when you were younger?
CHRISTIE GABRIEL: I wanted to be an architect actually. Since I was in first grade I’d spend hours drawing up floor plans. As I grew up I realized there was way too much math and college involved in it which took out a lot of the fun.

AVIVA: What did your parents/friends first think when you told them you were going to start modeling, before you succeeded at it?
CG: My mom was 100% all for it, as were most of my friends, although some of them did try to convince me that it was a bad idea to chase a pipe dream. My dad on the other hand….12 years later and I’m still not sure he’s completely warmed up to the idea; we just don’t talk much about work.

Above: Photo by TH Taylor

AVIVA: What achievements are you most proud of? (list publications, big gigs, etc).
CG: Sure I’ve worked for a few famous brands/people but honestly, I am most proud of my work educating and encouraging aspiring models. It’s so rewarding to see these girls go from self-conscious beginners to confident world traveling professionals.

AVIVA: What excites you the most about being a model?
CG: I love the idea of bringing a creative vision to life. Whether it be a client’s/photographer’s or my own, helping to create something that didn’t previously exist is an awesome feeling.

Above: Photo by David Hickey, MakeUp by Gia Deo.

AVIVA: What inspired you to write “The Self-Made Model – Success Without Agencies“?
CG: There is so much outdated and inaccurate information out there regarding modeling agencies. Most aspiring models still think that the agency route is the only way to truly become a successful model. That is just not true anymore.

In the last 6 years, I have booked far more work freelancing than I have through agencies in the same time frame. So, I wrote a book that would help others do the same.

The Self-Made Model – Success Without Agenciesis part how-to guide and part behind the scenes journal that encourages models to take control of their careers and become their own bosses.

AVIVA: What do you believe was the key to your success as a model, other than your look?
CG: I have an insane amount of ambition and perseverance. From the beginning of my career I decided that whatever I set out to accomplish, I would. Every year I’d set another seemingly impossible career goal and be sure to make it happen.
It is also important to always be professional, always. Word spreads like wildfire in this industry and one slip up can burn your reputation to the ground.

Above: Photo by TH Taylor.

AVIVA: What piece of advice would you give to aspiring models (who are reading this)?
CG: There are a lot of people and things that will try to stand in your way and/or take advantage of you in this industry. Arm yourself with as much information as you can from experienced professionals.

AVIVA: What are some of your other passions/interests?
CG: I’m an artistic person so of course I love modeling as well as painting and making strange wardrobe pieces for shoots.

AVIVA: Do you have any additional comments?
CG: Quick shameless plug: For nearly 200 pages of inside information that will help guide you to career success, grab a copy of my book on amazon . wink

I would like to thank Christie for her time and this interview. I wish her continued success for years to come. 🙂

GUEST POST: For a Different Spin on a Cocktail Dress, Go Elizabethan!

Attribute to: Jag Ture, Cayenne Red. Jag Ture is a regular article writer and blogger on behalf of Brands Exclusive, an online retailer specialising in Designer Shoes and Cocktail Dresses.

____________________________________________________________________________

A few seasons ago, the tulip dress was all the rage. That cute, kooky little number that pulled you in at the waist and ballooned out at the hips to create a tulip shape was perfect for creating curves where there are none, but also great for concealing lumps and bumps! Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category and have lumps and bumps where neither a lump nor bump should be, so when it came to find a dress for my aunt’s wedding I thought this would be perfect for my generous figure!

Just because this was hot a few seasons ago, it doesn’t mean this is OUT of season now, but purely for my (slight) addiction to internet shopping, I typed “tulip cocktail dresses” into the search engines instead of hitting the high-street and uncovered a whole wonderland of gorge tulip cocktail dresses, from plain, block colours to cute little flowers and bows.

On my travels through the wilds of the fashion corners of the web, I found a new trend that I had somehow completely missed: the modern, Elizabethan-style skirts and dresses! Hitting the catwalks via D&G’s 2008 Spring Collection, these amazing dresses incorporate all the style of this lavish, opulent era thrown smack-bang into the 21st century and given a saucy twist! Cut as a micro-mini to bring this forgotten style even more up to date, if the young Queen Elizabeth were alive today, I’m betting her cocktail dress would look a little something like this! I absolutely love this style – anything to put me in mind of the gorgeously rich Elizabethan dresses can’t be bad – but find myself a wee bit shy to brave the streets in one – yet!

GUEST POST: How To Give Your Friends A Total Bra Makeover

Submitted by Cindy Prosser

You know the feeling you get from a perfectly fitted bra? One that keeps you comfortable all day long – even into the late hours of the night. Or, one that makes you feel so confident that you can do anything?

Don’t you think your friends deserve to feel this way too? Giving your friend a total bra makeover will help boost their self-esteem, improve their health, and make them look and feel good wherever they go.

If you have a friend who would benefit from a makeover – whether their bra doesn’t look natural, doesn’t fit their style, or is the wrong size – it’s time to give them the makeover they deserve.

When you approach your friend, make sure to do it tactfully, without insult. Compliment them and tell them you want them to feel confident and empowered – and bra that is tailored for their body type may be just the ticket.

Once you have them on board, it’s time to get started.

Tips To Prepare for an Exceptional Shopping Experience

Find the latest styles – Flip through a magazine, browse online or go window-shopping to find the latest styles, what body type they’re right for, etc. Then, narrow down your choices to 3-4 styles to make the shopping trip a bit easier. Here are a few of the top styles:

o Backless or adhesive – This type of bra is great for a backless dress or top, and is secured to your skin with adhesive, provide good support and can be reused.

o Balconette – A balconette bra or shelf bra has little coverage but is great for wearing with low-cut tops because it enhances cleavage.

o Convertible – This type of bra is extremely popular because it can be worn with so many different outfits. Straps can be removed to be worn on one shoulder, criss-crossed, halter, strapless and much more.

o Demi-cup – A demi-cup bra enhances cleavage and covers about ¾ of the breast, so is also great for low-cut tops.

o Push-up – Push-up bras create increasing cleavage so your friend can choose the level of lift she wants.

o Racerback – A racerback or t-back bra is perfect underneath a tank top, as the straps come together in the back so aren’t visible.

o Seamless – Created without seams, a seamless bra is great underneath knit or lightweight fabrics because it’s nearly invisible under clothing.

o T-shirt bra – A t-shirt bra offers a smooth, seamless look under thin fabrics and clingy tops.

Set a budget – Perhaps even before narrowing down choices, decide how much your friend can spend. Specialty lingerie stores and online retailers tend to be more expensive, but they also offer high-quality bras that will last much longer than cheaply made ones.

Wear a non-padded bra – It’s almost time to start shopping, but before you set out, make sure your friend wears a non-padded bra so she can be more accurately measured.

Tips for A Great Bra Makeover

Now that you have the basics covered it’s time to go shop! Shop online or take your friend to a local specialty store,in search of the perfect fitting bra. Here are some things to keep in mind during your day on the town:

Get second opinions on size – Although it’s possible for you or your friend to measure, having a professional opinion can help. Most large department and specialty stores have someone on staff who can take care of this – though the experts are wrong sometimes!

o Band size: Band size is measured by wrapping the tape measure around the middle of the chest. If the measurement is an odd number, it will be rounded up to the next even number.

o Cup size: The measurement starts with wrapping tape around the fullest part of the bust. Then, the band size is subtracted which leaves the cup size. For example, if the band measurement was 34 inches and cup was 36, this indicates a B cup.

Experiment with a variety of styles – Have your friend choose a couple bras from each style so she can decide what fits her best.

• Check the signs of a great bra – If your friend has found the perfect bra, she will:

o Feel comfortable – The perfect bra should feel extremely comfortable so she can wear it for an entire day without feeling discomfort.

o Look great in a t-shirt – While in the dressing room, have her slip on a t-shirt to make sure she likes the silhouette.

o Not have spillover – When wearing the perfect bra, there shouldn’t be spillover on the sides or at the top.

o Not have gaps – The underwire should lie flat against the chest. If it doesn’t, perhaps a larger band size is in order.

o Not have extra fabric – Finally, the bra should fit well without having extra fabric or wrinkly cups. If it does have one of these things, she should consider going one size down.

Have fun! Most of all, make sure you’re having fun on your shopping trip – purchasing a bra should be a bonding experience; not something that’s stressful!

And there you have it – the ticket to a perfect bra. Keep in mind these tips, or print off this checklist and take it with you next time you and your friend go bra shopping.

Interview with Fashion Model Katlin Sumners

Katlin Sumners is a beautiful and talented runway fashion model with over 3 years of industry experience. Throughout her career, she has worked with hundreds of photographers, designers, make-up artists and stylists. It is not a surprise that she has been published multiple times and I am sure that she will continue to thrive in the fashion world. In her spare time, Katlin enjoys doing yoga, making her a huge asset at photoshoots which call for unique posing, requiring flexibility. In addition, she is great at hair styling and doing her own make-up, so that means that having Katlin at a shoot is like having a whole team of talented individuals.

AVIVA: How did you get started in modeling?
KATLIN SUMNERS: I began modeling in November 2007 not too long after I turned 18 and was inspired by a friend’s modeling pictures. Although her photos were taken by an amateur photographer and were not all that professional, it was enough to inspire me to get really serious and begin networking and building up a small portfolio, and after that there was no where to go but up.

AVIVA: What excites/inspires you the most about your job?
KS: The people. Its such a wonderful experience to be able to meet and work with so many talented individuals from all over the world and with so many different backgrounds and personalities. I’ve really enjoyed meeting all the people from all over, and many of those I’ve worked with have become friends. Each one of them has such a different story, its really an amazing experience and an honor to be able to meet so many diverse individuals. Where else would I be able to meet such a variety of people except in the modeling field?

AVIVA: What achievement(s) in your career are you most proud of (publications etc)?
KS: Though I am always proud and excited for any publication I receive, I am most proud of my recent work that came out in Giuseppina’s “Pride” issue this July 2011… This is because aside from some featured photos, I also had the chance to write a piece about my life and what it was like growing up with lesbian parents in the 1990s. Its really a special experience to get to share with the world, and supporting awareness and Pride for the gay community which I grew up close to is wonderful.

AVIVA: Have you always wanted to be a model or did you have other career aspirations when you were younger?
KS: I have always wanted to be a model, honestly. When I first began modeling I got really into the spirit and colorful concepts of Alternative modeling, and though I transitioned into fashion modeling where I feel most comfortable, I think you can still see a little bit of that initial influence in my more avant-garde photos now.

AVIVA: If you could meet a famous person, who would it be and why?
KS: Honestly, this will sound cliche, but I can’t really think of a celebrity or famous person that I would want to meet- even in the music industry.

AVIVA: What do you feel has been your greatest challenge that you had to overcome as a model?
KS: My height and age. Though I am tall for a female at 5’8 and 3/4 and only 21 years old, most major fashion agencies start training girls for runway at 12-17 years old, and most major agencies want girls who are 5’9 and over. This means I end up doing a lot of commercial projects, but honestly, I enjoy that so it’s not so bad.

AVIVA: What piece of advice do you have for aspiring models?
KS: Network yourself early and network yourself well- really strive to put your work out there in every single way possible. Always be polite and professional, even when someone else is not doing so- be the bigger person. Knowing basic makeup and hair skills has come in handy more times than I can count, practice your skills as often as possible. Last but not least always, always leave an hour earlier than you need to for a photoshoot. Being early is never a bad thing!

AVIVA: What are your top 3 goals (career or personal) for the next 5 years of your life?
KS: I have a silly but fun personal project I’m working on for modeling, which is to shoot with as many farm animals and exotic animals as possible during my career! So far I have shot with several horses, cats, my puppy, a black German shepherd, a goat, a polish chicken, a peacock and a pigeon. To do a model tour of Europe, hopefully for a few months next year after I finish my associates degree. To finish my bachelors degree.
